Materiom is an innovation platform for regenerative materials R&D, on a mission to accelerate the development of bio-based materials that replace petrochemical plastics. We are a team of around twelve people spanning materials science, AI/ML, software engineering, circular economy and design, transitioning toward commercial viability while staying true to our public-benefit focus.
The role
This mid-level role sits at the intersection of applied machine learning and applied AI: predictive modelling on scientific data alongside building LLM-powered tools. The work spans two main areas:
- Predictive modelling – developing ML models that map bio-based formulation design spaces, and the MLOps infrastructure for active learning
- LLMs and agentic systems – integrating our data and model intelligence into AI agents
Responsibilities include:
- Design, build and deploy ML models that predict bio-based formulation properties
- Develop and maintain data mining, model training and active learning pipelines
- Build and improve LLM-powered tools and agentic systems
- Deploy ML/AI tooling to partners and users to gather feedback
- Run rigorous modelling experiments and iterate toward quality objectives
- Contribute to LLMOps and MLOps practices, including versioning and monitoring
- Communicate complex technical concepts to multidisciplinary teams
- Collaborate closely with the tech team while staying aligned with product and scientific priorities
Who we are looking for
2-4 years of professional experience in data-driven or ML engineering, ideally in a startup environment.
- Master’s degree in a technical field (Computer Science, AI or Machine Learning)
- Strong ML fundamentals with a solid understanding of model mechanics
- Hands-on experience with structured/tabular data and real-world model development
- Practical LLM building experience – prompt engineering, RAG, tool use and agentic frameworks
- Strong Python skills with good software engineering practices
- Familiarity with a major cloud platform (e.g. GCP)
- Excellent problem-solving and analytical skills
- Comfortable operating independently in ambiguous environments
Nice to have:
- Experience deploying ML/AI artifacts for user feedback collection
- Active learning or closed-loop experimentation workflows
- Scientific data familiarity (chemistry, materials science)
- Open-source framework experience
- Interest in bio-based materials or sustainability
Why apply
- Competitive salary from £75K+ with performance-based annual bonus
- 30 days’ paid annual leave plus UK bank holidays
- Annual learning and mentorship budget
- Flexible hybrid working with remote options and Bike2Work scheme
- International company retreats and an interdisciplinary, collaborative culture
- Meaningful work at the frontier of regenerative, sustainable materials
